At the invitation of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Mr Milan Kucan, the 9th Meeting of the Presidents of Central European States will be held in Slovenia on 31 May and 1 June 2002. The organisation committee headed by the Secretary General of the Office of the President, Mr Marjan Siftar, informed the representatives of participating countries today of the progress of preparations for this extremely important international event. Thematic, information, promotion, protocol and security aspects of the meeting which form the basis of preparations and implementation were presented to advance delegations. Preparations have started as early as last year and are carried out by more than 20 state bodies and services which as so often in the past try to provide optimum conditions for this meeting. The representatives were satisfied with the preparatory work carried out to date.

This year's meeting of presidents will be undoubtedly the most significant and largest multilateral meeting ever to take place in Slovenia and in the history of the meetings of Central European presidents. The title of the meeting will be: "Central Europe as a link in the integrating Europe - achievements of transformation processes in Central Europe". In his letter to participating heads of state President Milan Kucan invited them to reflect on the following topics of the meeting: Europe and its identity in the context of a globalised world; the impact of the European Union and NATO enlargement processes on the creation of European identity; Convention on the Future of Europe in the context of topical political, economic, security and cultural challenges; the present "European order" as a factor in the protection of political democracy, stability, peace and security in Europe and in the stabilisation of conflicting tendencies - potential threats to these values; the role of Central Europe in transformation processes in south-eastern Europe; and other.
